Whether it’s a first baby or a new addition, maternity sessions are a lovely way to capture a moment in time. I love hearing about your journey so far and sharing the excitement of your soon to be new baby. Often I get asked about maternity sessions. Sometimes I have clients come in for later sessions and say they had wished they’d captured the maternity stage. So I thought I would give a little insight in to what a maternity session involves.
I know how tough pregnancy can be. As a mum of three boys I remember those last few weeks. Maternity sessions were not as popular when I had my first two children as they are now. When I was pregnant with my third my lovely photographer friends encouraged or possibly bribed me with cake to be a model for them. I hated my body, I didn’t want to stand half naked in front of people. I made myself step out of my comfort zone and I am so glad that I did as I love the photos. When I look at them now it still amazes me that the 5 year old I have running around demanding snacks was inside that bump.
Maternity sessions with me are relaxed, I work with you to create images that you will be happy with. This includes clothing, colours and the poses we do. Older children and partners are very welcome to take part in your session. My aim is to capture the connection between you all and your soon to be new little one.
When do I book a maternity session?
Most people book in for their maternity session after they have had their 20 week scan. We would schedule your session for when you are around 32-36 weeks. Around this time most ladies have a nice size bump but have not yet reached the uncomfortable last few weeks of pregnancy. We can do earlier or later than this if needed. When you book in I will send you over a short questionnaire, asking a few questions about colour choices, outfits and if you will have family members with you. Any answers given will be used to write up your personalised session plan.
What do I wear?
One of the first things I am asked when clients book in is what to wear? My answer will always be whatever you feel comfortable in. We want you to look relaxed in your images. Maternity images can be created using dresses, everyday clothing, bras and knickers or nude. I have a few beautiful maternity dresses that you are welcome to borrow but you can also bring along your own. We can also create beautiful images using just fabric. You may notice from the images on this post that we have used simple set ups and one colour clothing. This is because we want the main focus of your images to be you.
What happens when I come for my maternity session?
My dedicated photography studio is based in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. It is my happy space as it is calm and peaceful. Living in a home full of boys it is also my little place where I can add some girlie colours and get away with it. Once I have welcomed you in to the studio we will start your session. We will capture a variety of images and you are welcome to have a look at any of the products I have on display. After your session I will edit your images, it usually takes me around 1-2 weeks to work through your images. You will then be invited back to the studio to view your finished gallery and order the images you would like to purchase. I am also there to answer any questions you have regarding products.
